December News

Rocky – we are very sad to have to announce that Rocky, who founded and coordinated the Rockstone Bike Hub at the front of the park, has passed away. He will be sorely missed by us all. There was a memorial gathering at Rockstone’s on Wednesday 30th November arranged by his family and friends.

Lordship Rec videos  We’ve set up a video page on our website – www.lordshiprec.org.uk/gallery – with many of the key videos taken about the Rec recently and over the years. One of them is an interview in 2020 with Rocky – https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5NyQCAuJN_k  There’s many other informative and inspiring videos there as well – why not have a browse?
Lordship Rec: New Weather Station and the world’s first Cloud Appreciation Park!  In honour of the 250th anniversary of Tottenham resident Luke Howard, the ‘namer of clouds’, we helped organise a month of events and exhibitions, including last Saturday’s activities for kids and a special Clouds Day last Sunday. Over 150 people took part in the weekend’s activities, discussions, talks, and a film show, and the Hub’s new weather station was launched. Its never been more important for us all to understand weather issues and take action to reverse climate change. At the top of the park, near the Higham Road entrance, we held a ceremony with reps from the Met Office, Cloud Appreciation Society, the deputy mayor of Haringey, and a descendant of Luke Howard, to unveil our new ‘Cloud Gazing In Lordship Rec’ interpretation board and declare Lordship Rec the world’s first Cloud Appreciation Park. You can watch the ceremony video here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DF24qNZ5iK4

REPORTS FROM OCTOBER EVENTS
‘Scenes from the Farm’

On Sunday October 16th 55 people attended a showing at the Hub of the powerful 1988 TV documentary about the African-Caribbean and activist community on Broadwater Farm. This was followed by a fascinating Q & A with special guest, Clasford Stirling – one of the activists featured in the film, and still as active as ever today as coordinator of the Broadwater United FC youth football teams based in the sports field in the Rec. The event was organised by the Friends of Lordship Rec. Dave, the FLR chair, explained at the showing that when the Friends formed in 2001 they had taken great inspiration from the efforts to improve facilities and community empowerment on the Farm in the decades before.
Halloween
On Friday 28th October, Joan and Nina of the Friends coordinated a lantern-making event at the Hub attended by over 200 people – this was followed by an evening Halloween walk and ‘scary story’ by Mr Squash.
ParkRun
On Saturday 22nd October nearly 260 people took part in the first Lordship Rec ParkRun event, followed by a similar number the following Saturday. This is the culmination of a year of planning since an enthusiast, Daniel, first floated the idea at a Friends meeting. The runs are for all ages and abilities and are backed by the Friends and the Hub – to continue every Saturday at 9am. More info: https://www.parkrun.org.uk/lordshiprecreationground/

Apple Day
On Sunday October 30th loads of people of all ages flocked to the Friends’ annual event celebrating apples – it included people helping make their own apple juice, doing a quiz, kids doing apple bobbing and squishing, kids crafts, longest peel contest, home made apple cakes for sale, information displays including samples of 60 different varieties of hand-picked apples!

Volunteering sessions in the Rec

Our Friends regular volunteering sessions continue. Each week there’s an opportunity for park users to join us in the orchard, the Woodland, or help with our Litterpickers group. And and on Saturday 29th October a dozen volunteers got down and dirty into the River Moselle channel to clear a stretch of overgrown vegetation to help the river flow more easily.
