KIDS COLLECTIVE COMMUNITY ARTS GROUP PRESENTS…
MONKEY – JOURNEY TO THE WEST + KUNG FU DEMONSTRATION
Born from an egg on a mountain top
The punkiest monkey that ever rocked
He knew every trick under the Sun
To tease the Gods and everyone
…and have some fun!
February 28th is the day of the Chinese Lantern Festival and to celebrate the occasion, we will be having a display of the dynamic and deadly Shantung Northern Praying Mantis Kung Fu, some healthy Chinese snacks and a rare public screening of a classic episode from the cult 70’s TV series, Monkey. Hatched from a stone egg and given the secrets of heaven and earth, the irrepressible trickster Monkey can ride on the clouds, become invisible and transform into other shapes and has skills that prove very useful when up against the dragons, bandits, demons and evil wizards that threaten to prevent him and his companions in their mission. Based on the great 16th century quest stories by Wu Ch’eng-en, these are a dazzling combination of nonsense and profundity, slapstick comedy and ancient enlightenment – with a general election looming, maybe we should contemplate the words of Confucius on politicians: "Never give a sword to a man who can’t dance".
